Monthly Budgets

Hi all.  Apologies for semi-disappearing this month.  But, it seemed like if I started the month with a post, I best end it with one too!

So here are some words of wisdom to help you live life empowered.  The idea came from a few "top # things _____ know by _____" (aka, all those Facebook posts you get lost in while scanning through the home page)  One was about your twenties, and another was about your thirties.  Something I loved about the thirties one was that it discussed money.

Eek! Money!  Sometimes a taboo topic, and sadly so, but one I love discussing.  The post was along the lines of, "I'd wished I'd saved more" because by the end of 30 you are at 40 and therefore closer to retirement than when you went from 29 to 30.  Make sense, but here are a few things I still think they should discuss:

Where are you putting your money to make it earn more money for you? (PS, savings accounts don't count as money earners, lol...have you noticed their interest rates lately?!)

What's your "in case" fund?  Do you have one and how long will it sustain you if something severely unexpected came your way?  Oddly, and after talking to a financial planner whose son I tutor about words of wisdom he'd impart if people thought to ask, this was one of them.  Specifically, he meant for short-term disability insurance as 50% of people will need short-term disability in the next 10 years for anywhere form 3 months to a year.  Crazy to think about right?  Most of us think we are happy and healthy, but he was saying that the reality is that it's just something that happens.  And it's usually not work related, but an injury that denies one the ability to work for an extended period of time.

So, once you've answered those questions, then take a look at your daily habits.  What's your budget for your month?  How much do you need to make to make ends meet (and by the way, paying minimum on credit cards is really you constantly taking out loans. Pay them off!  Carrying balances is not financially sounds unless it's something like a car or mortgage that most people cant' pay for in cash)

Do you put 10% into savings automatically?  If not, get in the habit now!  You'll be amazing in 3-5 years how much you have actually put away!  And if you can swing more, even better!

So here's to the end of March, and you starting April strong!  And financially well!!
